On 6 October 2021, during the 48th session of the Council, a number of civil society organizations called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to increase support for the democratic transition in Sudan and to place women's rights at the center of this support. During the enhanced interactive dialogue on the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Sudan, ISHR presented a joint statement on behalf of the Coalition of Women Human Rights Defenders in the Middle East and North Africa, the Action Organization for Women's Rights in Sudan and Noura (the Center for Combating Sexual Violence) in which they shed light on the challenges facing women and women human rights defenders in Sudan.
The organizations warned of the danger of the militarization of the state and considered it a threat to the rights of women and human rights defenders in Sudan, and pointed to the attempted military coup on September 21, 2021 as a threat to the democratic transition and thus a threat to women’s rights. Some countries highlighted the persistence of women's rights issues and stressed the need to strengthen protection of their rights.
